Admissions Procedure

Entry to Hereward House

Thank you for considering Hereward House for your son’s education. We understand that choosing a school is one of the most important decisions that you will ever make.

4+ Entry

The main point of entry for the school is in to the Transition (Reception) year. The Transition class starts in the September following a boy’s fourth birthday. Due to the volume of applications it is advisable to register before your son is 18 months old.

Registered parents will be invited to visit during the calendar year preceding their son's prospective year of entry (i.e. a family registered for 2026 entry will be invited to visit during the calendar year 2025). During the visit parents will get a tour of the school alongside a meeting with the Headmaster, which will hopefully give a good overview of our school; both the physical space and our educational values and philosophy.

Places are offered out in the January prior to the September that your son is due to start at the school and offers are made on the understanding that your son is expected to stay until 13.

Regrettably we are fully subscribed for entry in 2024, but are accepting applications for 2025, 2026, 2027 and 2028. Families wishing to register for 2025 should do so before 9th February 2024.

7+ Entry

In most years we are in a position to be able to consider a small number of boys into Year 3 at the 7+ stage.

Entry at this stage involves an initial meeting with the Headmaster to talk about specific goals and aspirations. This is followed by the prospective pupil spending a taster morning with the existing class, as well as coming in after school one day for a one-to-one session. Families should aim to contact us before Christmas of Year 2.

11+ Entry

Over the last few years interest in entry into Year 7 has been increasing, and each year we are able to take a small number of suitable boys into the school at the 11+ stage.

This would potentially suit boys in a number of different situations, such as boys whose prep school ends at Year 6, but whose chosen Senior School only starts into Year 9, or boys from the state sector who are looking to move into the independent sector.

Hereward House can offer small class sizes, outstanding teaching and a bespoke knowledge of each Senior School’s admissions pathway and examination system to help each pupil achieve their chosen goals. Prior to admission we will discuss with each family their specific situation and requirements in order to ensure that we are the right school for their desired outcome. Prospective pupils will be asked to spend a day within the existing class, and references will be sought from current schools. They may also be asked to take a standardised test.

Pupils who have joined us at 11+ over the last few years have gone on to receive offers from St Pauls’, City of London, Tonbridge, St Albans and Merchant Taylors’.

Occasional Places

Occasional places arise from time to time. If you are looking for admission into Year 1 or above please contact the School Office for availability. If a potential space exists you will be invited in for a tour of the school and an interview with the Headmaster. Your son may also be required to complete an assessment as well as participate in a ‘taster day’ at the school.
